The Emotional Sequence
Emotional pain commonly intensifies when it is judged, hidden or denied. The sequence is: event, sensation, emotion, interpretation, impulse, action, consequence.
Interrupting this sequence creates choice.
- What happened?
- What did my body feel?
- What emotion appeared?
- What meaning did I give it?
- What action would protect my dignity and long-term wellbeing?
Anger
Anger may signal violation, frustration, injustice, exhaustion or unexpressed need. Do not use spirituality to erase justified anger. Transform anger into protection, truth and constructive change.
Fear, Shame and Guilt
- Fear asks: is the threat happening now, what evidence supports it, and what practical protection is available?
- Shame says there is something wrong with me. A kinder response is that something painful happened, or something needs repair, without making the whole self worthless.
- Healthy guilt points toward repair. Unhealthy guilt keeps demanding punishment after responsibility and correction have already taken place.
